Technofog (/tɛkˈnɒ/fɒɡ/) – the confluence of domain specific jargon, technical debt and knowledge gaps that negate sensible use of even familiar technologies at the start of a new job or project.
WAT?
As a contractor I move around a lot more than permanent members of staff so this is particularly relevant for any freelancers and project / gig oriented roles. I think it’s also relevant to a wide variety of industries, I’m just more personally invested in technological ones.
It can be completely overwhelming at times. Legacy systems or technologies can bring with them disproportionate amounts of confusion. Add to that incorrect, misunderstood or puzzling implementations of familiar things and the noise levels can be challenging.
As those things are understood and the domain knowledge gaps are closed, the fog begins to lift.
